Make & decorate a vase

one day workshop

Create a original piece of homeware using traditional hand building skills. The vase can be a simple form that can be modified and customised into something truly special. Just imagine your friends faces after you tell them you made it.

This one day workshop teaches you two major skills in pottery. The morning session will focus on Coiling this technique has been used for thousands of years to make larger pieces. This will create the body of your vase. We encourage you to come with ideas. The wilder the better. So you can really challenge our on hand pottery experts. After all nobody wants a boring cylinder for a vase.

Over the lunch break your vase will have time to dry out enough for you to learn the next skill. Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of colour or colours (underglazes or coloured slips) to pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay colour underneath. At the end of the day your piece will be sitting pretty on our drying rack, and we’ll get it fired for you just as soon as it’s kiln-ready.

Your vase will be ready to collect and use around 3 weeks after your session - we’ll let you know if it’s ready sooner (it all depends on our firing schedule). If you aren’t local, we can post it to you!
